1st MSIR-APSCVIR OUTREACH PROGRAMME 2023 REPORT

After a hiatus of 3 years, the APSCVIR Outreach programme resumed the in-person format in Mongolia, in partnership with the Mongolian Society of Interventional Radiology (MSIR).

The 1st MSIR-APSCVIR Outreach Program was successfully held on 2-4 October 2023, at the Second State Central Hospital in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The APSCVIR Faculty were,

Dr Yasuaki Arai, (National Cancer Center, Tokyo, Japan)
Dr Rickie Cheng (Princess Margaret Hospital, Hong Kong)
Dr Winston Lim (Singapore General Hospital, Singapore)
Dr Tan Bien Soo (Singapore General Hospital, Singapore)

This Outreach Program had the main theme of Interventional Oncology and Neurointervention, and it included live case demonstrations, lectures, and bench-top teaching sessions. A total of 67 attendees participated in this Outreach Programme.

A total of 21 lectures were delivered, with 17 lectures given by the APSCVIR Faculty and 4 lectures given by local speakers. The program also featured 5 live case demonstrations, showcasing procedures such as transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radiofrequency ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma, portal vein embolization, central venous port-a-cath insertion, and embolization of intracerebral aneurysm using the flow diverter. All the cases were performed by highly skilled senior local interventional radiologists, supported by APSCVIR faculty.

Additionally, two transradial TACE procedures were demonstrated at the National Cancer Center. Four bench-top teaching sessions were organized, focusing on neurointervention, solid organ thermal ablation, and ultrasound-guided biopsy.

Following the Outreach Programme, the APSCVIR Faculty also took part in the MSIR Annual Scientific Meeting, which was held at the Chinggis Khan National Museum in Ulaanbaatar on 5 October 2023. During the Scientific Meeting, there were 6 presentations by the APSCVIR Faculty and 9 presentations by local speakers. The event attracted an audience of 110 attendees.

APSCVIR Faculty were acknowledged for volunteering their time and sourcing their own funding for both travel and accommodation. APSCVIR conveyed its heartfelt appreciation to Dr Erdenebulgan Batmunkh and his MSIR colleagues for their wonderful organization of the proceedings and exceptional hospitality in taking care of all the faculty’s needs during our stay in Mongolia.

The faculty agreed that this was a very meaningful initiative with great scope for collaborating in a sustained effort to further develop interventional radiology in Mongolia. The 2nd MSIR-APSCVIR Outreach Programme is already being anticipated for October 2024.
