APSCVIR 2021 Summary

By Dr. Liang, Huei-Lung MD.

Organizing Chairman of 15th APSCVIR 2021

2020 was a difficult year for the world. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted everything in our so-called “normal life”. Although the 15th Annual Scientific Meeting of APSCVIR was scheduled to take place in 2020 at the beautiful Grand Hotel in Taipei, circumstances forced us to postpone it to 2021. While an in-person meeting was still impossible, the organizing committee of Taiwan eventually hosted an entirely online event with a wonderful turnout that produced very memorable experiences.

APSCVIR 2021 took place in Taiwan from 26th to 28th February 2021. The meeting was the first online APSCVIR ASM ever. The scientific program was comprehensive and thought-provoking, with many exciting speakers presenting a number of fresh and innovative ideas, from our opening session on Extreme IR to our closing session on Mobility and Morality, as well as sessions on GI Vessel Occlusion and Hemorrhage, Early-to-Advanced-Stage HCC just to name a few. The three-and-a-half days of the Scientific Program consisted of 45 sessions regarding the latest updates in the field of interventional radiology. These were presented by 160 world-class international and regional faculty members sharing their perspectives and newest experiences in 260 talks to approximately 880 attendees from Interventional Radiology associations from around the world.

A total of 60 Oral Presentations were given during the meeting, showing works of great interest from younger interventional radiologists. Also, with the great efforts of the Society and the organizing committee of Taiwan Society of Interventional Radiology, we sponsored 315 young IR doctors to participate in this event.

We were also pleased to expand APSCVIR collaboration with more global societies through joint sessions with CIRSE, SIR, SIO, APCIO, SPIR, and KSIR. A special thanks goes out to SIR for having their Y-90 courses in our meeting. The global society’s strong support of the 15th APSCVIR 2021 Taiwan was greatly appreciated, providing plenty of opportunities to interact and strengthen network between societies.

20 Exhibitors and 5 Industry Sessions indicated significant support from the industry to APSCVIR. We are grateful for this mutual collaboration to promote the latest science and technology of Interventional Radiology, raising awareness amongst doctors, scientists and other allied healthcare professionals in this exciting field.

The 15th APSCVIR 2021 also continued its tradition to encourage young IR’s below the age of 40 years from developing IR countries through the APSCVIR 2021 Scholarship. The organizing committee decided to expend this grant to more countries due to the hardship of COVID-19, encouraging even more young physicians to join this exciting event.

Organizing this prestigious event during the COVID-19 pandemic was challenging to say the least, but we are happy to have gathered such a distinguished group of participants together. We thank all our speakers, moderators, panelists, presenters, and – most of all – the attendees for coming and participating in such difficult times. The 15th APSCVIR 2021 would not have been the same without each and every one of you. Together, we will continue our ongoing effort to uplift the level of clinical practice and research of Cardiovascular & Interventional Radiology in Asia Pacific region!
